Harrietta State Fish Hatchery is State of Michigan’s oldest operating state hatchery and was first opened in 1901. It is a major rearing facility for rainbow (mostly for inland waters) and brown trout (both inland and Great Lakes waters). The current facility was completely renovated in 1979 with minor improvements made in 1994 and 1999. The current rearing facility uses only well water and has both indoor and outdoor rearing facilities. The facility has new interpretative facilities that provide information on how watersheds work and how a hatchery operates. (http://www.michigan.gov/dnr)

Backpacks For Kids Fundraiser:
"Skippyjon Jones" on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 11:00 am and 1:30 pm
City Opera House
Tickets:  $10
Purchase: www.tcsunriserotary.org
What do a Chihuahua, Sunrise Rotary and kids have in common? Skippyjon Jones! Together they are going to help raise money for your local Backpacks for Kids program. A portion of the proceeds from all Skippyjon Jones tickets purchased through Sunrise Rotary goes to the Backpack for Kids program.
Skippyjon Jones is an enchanting family musical about a little kitten with big ears & big dreams. Based on the book by Judy Schachner, it is a delightful family musical about unleashing your imagination and following your dreams. This family event is happening over the Thanksgiving weekend and is just $10 a ticket. It is a great family activity for children ages 4 – 8.
Sunrise Rotary’s backpacks for kids has annually supplied 1,300 new backpacks stuffed with school supplies to public school children in grades K-5, as well as to selected charter schools and Goodwill Industries since 2004. Students are identified through TCAPS administration and include students qualifying for the reduced school lunch program. This year Sunrise Rotary handed out its 10,000th backpack!
Donations of product were originally sought but it was quickly found that it was impossible to obtain sufficient quantities of individual items. In subsequent years, Sunrise Rotary has sought funding through charitable contributions and grants to help offset the expenses. On average a fully supplied backpack costs $15.00, requiring annual proceeds of $20,000.
Help support the Back Packs for Kids program by purchasing tickets to a Skippyjon Jones performance. There are two performances at the City Opera House, Traverse City, MI on Saturday November 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tickets are just $10. To support Backpack for Kids, tickets must be purchased through the Sunrise Rotary site at: www.tcsunriserotary.org.
The Traverse Bay Sunrise Rotary Club, formed in 1999, is one of three Traverse City Rotary International clubs. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities, international exchanges for students, and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self.”
